Privacy Policy
Grouse Finder · grousefinder.com · Version 0.9 (interim) · Effective October 12, 2026
This policy follows the one template shared by every Finder app from Northwoods Investment LLC. The last section is specific to Grouse Finder. It is an interim document, written without an attorney, and will be replaced by the attorney's final text.
Northwoods Investment LLC collects as little about you as the app needs. We don't sell your information, and we don't share it for advertising.
What we collect and why
| What | Why | Where it's kept | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your email address | To sign you in and link your Finder apps | Our servers (Cloudflare) | Until you delete your account |
| Record that you accepted the Terms and disclaimer (date, version, account) | To show the terms you agreed to | Our servers (Cloudflare) | Kept after you delete your account, as the record of what was agreed. How many years it is kept will be set after legal review. |
| Address or map point you search | To return spots near it | Sent to our servers to run the search and not stored with your account. For a free account we store only a count of the searches you've used. | Used to answer the search, then discarded (apart from Cloudflare's short-lived technical logs, below) |
| Tracks, waypoints, pins and notes | Your own records | On your phone only, unless you turn on backup | Until you delete them |
| Backup of the above (if you turn it on) | To restore them on a new phone | Our servers (Cloudflare) | Until you turn backup off or delete your account |
| Pins you choose to share to test the maps (if you turn it on), without your name or email | To test and improve the maps | Our servers (Cloudflare) | Until you turn sharing off or delete your account |
| Subscription status (once paid plans open) | To unlock your plan | Stripe and our servers | As long as Stripe and tax law require |
| Technical logs, such as IP addresses | To run and protect the app | Cloudflare | Cloudflare's standard retention |
Location
The app uses your phone's location only on your phone, for features like Guide me in and track recording. Your live location is not sent to us unless you turn on backup of your tracks.
What we don't do
- We don't sell, rent or trade your information or your spots.
- We don't show your pins or spots to other users.
- We don't use advertising trackers or advertising cookies. Sign-in uses a login cookie.
Who else handles your information
- Cloudflare hosts the app and stores account data.
- Stripe processes payments, once paid plans open. We never see or store your full card number.
- Resend sends your email confirmation codes and password-reset links.
We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect our rights or someone's safety.
Your choices
- Turn backup and pin sharing on or off at any time in the app.
- Delete your account from the Account panel. That deletes your email, backups and settings. We keep only the acceptance record above.
- Ask us what we hold about you, or to correct or delete it, at [email protected].
Children
The app is not meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you think a child under 13 has an account, tell us and we'll delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the version and date above and tell you in the app before your next search.

Grouse Finder section
- Sharing your flush log (off by default). Only if you tick "Share my pins, without my name or email, to help check and improve the maps." are your flush pins (grouse flush, woodcock flush, or no flush, with the date, place and your note) stored on our server, and used without your name or email to check the map. Shared pins are never shown to other users, sold or given away. Unticking the box deletes them from our server right away.
- Backup of places and trails (off by default). Only if you turn on "Back up my places and trails to my account" are they copied to your account. They are private to you: never shown to other users or on our admin page, never used to test the map. Turning it off deletes the copy right away.
- Your account also holds the name you give, your password in scrambled (hashed) form that can't be turned back into the password, when you joined and last signed in, any invite code you used, whether you've confirmed your email, your plan and Stripe customer number, and whether you've used your one refund.
- On your phone: your last search and its answer (so reopening the app doesn't use up a free search), and, on Pro only, map tiles and spot lists you've viewed, for offline use. Whether "Show spots on private land" is on is kept only while the app is open.
- Other services the app calls: addresses you type are passed through our server to the U.S. Census Bureau geocoder and OpenStreetMap's Nominatim to find the place, and not logged by us. Weather on Starter and Pro comes from the U.S. National Weather Service, which receives the searched point rounded to about half a mile, not who you are. Map imagery comes from the U.S. Geological Survey, and fonts and map code from Google Fonts and unpkg; like any website, they see your IP address when your phone loads them.
- Cookies: one keeps you signed in; one remembers a purchase made on this phone, once paid plans open; and, if you accept the private-land disclaimer before signing in, one holds a random visitor number so that acceptance can be added to your account when you sign in. No advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
- Deleting your account also deletes any backup and shared pins. Stripe keeps payment records as the law requires.
